Silk Mark Expo 2012 exhibits pure varieties of silk

A silk expo, 'Silk Mark Expo 2012' was organized in Chennai from 6 to 11 December where silk varieties from all over the country were made available under one roof. The event was organised to raise awareness amongst people so that they don't fall for 'fake' silk.

THE MAIN aim of the week-long exhibition is to provide all varieties of pure silk products under one roof and generate awareness on genuine silk with mark assurance label on it. The authorities say that their main goal is to encourage people to look for the silk mark label, which is a mark of 100 per cent pure silk.

There are several authorized users of the silk mark and about sixteen states are exhibiting their silk varieties like Kanjivaram, Banarasi, Chanderi and Chamber. About sixty stalls have been set up at the expo in Chennai. “All varieties from different ranges from Rs 2000 to 17000 are available,” says Chitra, a visitor.

Murali, assitant director of the silk mark expo told NNIS: “We guarantee the consumers of Chennai to get 100 percent pure silk product from our expo. All the pure silk products with silk mark labels are available in this expo.”

In a move to raise awareness about the pure silk amongst the buyers and to guide them, several contests are also being organized, where customers are asked to identify the samples of pure silk, mixed silk and non silk, says Mr. PM Pandi, Deputy Director (Insp.) and Senior Executive, Silk Mark Organization of India, Regional Development Office.

He also added that members of SMOI are allowed to use the silk mark on their products only when they establish credentials as producers, retailers and exporters of authenticated silk. If consumers have any doubt on the products' quality and genuineness, then they can get it tested at Silk Mark Organization of India testing centers.
