A new entrant has entered the Jaipur-Salman Rushdie controversy. After the students body, SIMI, it seems that Simi, a namesake, is also not happy with his inclusion in the festival.
THE YESTERYEAR film actress and the Indian Oprah Winfrey, Simi Garewal got caught up in the whole Salman Rushdie controversy, with no fault of her own. Incidentally, the government’s intelligence report warned the Booker prize winner author, Salman Rushdie about an attack from the Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI). A website reported that many news reports took the student’s body to be Simi Garewal.

It was a hilarious situation and to add some more masala to the situation, Salman Rushdie tweeted, “Simi said the only Salman she liked, worked in Bollywood. So all that sm-arming up to me last time I was in Bombay was fake? Such a surprise.” After the matter got clarified, he confirmed it as reported in timesofindia.com and said that he couldn’t resist but join in the fun.
Inspite of talks about the joke that centred around the controversy of his coming to the Jaipur Literary Festival, the author held his silence about the core matter. He did not say anything about his absence or presence in the Festival. He was invited to be a part of the festival on January 20 and 21.
The Festival producer, on the other hand, seems too frustrated about the matter as he said that there are 250 other authors in the festival and he doesn’t mind answering questions as long as they are not about the ‘Satanic Verses’ author. Allegedly, he and the members of the organising group reacted in this manner after they met with a few Muslim organisations who came to Diggi Palace, the venue of festival. But the organisers are not withdrawing their invitation to the author and it is up to the writer to accept or stay away from the venue.
