Simon Cowell: The irreplaceable acerbic Brit
Simon Cowell, the Brit who has been the greatest ambassador of American Idol could ever ask for has finally left the show after eight years with the franchise. Whether or not Idol can move on successfully without Cowell is still left to be seen.
IF THE names Steven Tyler and Elton John suddenly seem to evoke great debates that have the ability of splitting families right down the middle it is no reason for worry. They are just some of the names that are doing the rounds as a replacement to Simon Cowell. The Brit who has been the greatest ambassador of the show American Idol could ever ask for has finally left the show after eight years with the franchise.

Both Elton John and Steven Tyler are amazing musicians but if they share the foresight that Simon did is still left to be seen. When they showed the clip of Simon telling Carrie Underwood that she will not only be the next Idol but will go on to sell more records than any performer in the history of Idol, it just went to show you what the franchise is going to miss without him.

He had a knack for identifying talent and foreseeing the greatness they will produce. Whether it was Boyzone, Westlife, Il Divo, Leona Lewis or Carrie Underwood, he saw success even before the singers believed in themselves. Even this season, it was in the first episode of the Top 24 round that Simon singled out Lee Dewyze as the guy with the best voice and what happened to Lee? He went all the way! I believe Lee nailed the competition when he sang ‘Hallelujah’ and not surprisingly that was a song Simon chose for him and a song Simon said Lee would outperform. I’m so sure Simon even worked out the arrangement for him, with the choir girls and all.

However, compare this to last year where Simon was practically out of words describing performances such as 'Mad World' and 'Tracks Of My Tears' from Adam Lambert, this year it was more about Lee’s honesty and voice and not his artistry that singled him out. This was evident when Ryan compared some of the greatest memories of the past season describing Kelly Clarkson’s 'A Moment Like This' and Adam Lambert’s 'Mad World' but went on to compare 'Pants On The Ground' as this season’s highlight.

As a writer of a million dollar franchise, I don’t think this was apt and it just goes to subliminally show that this season was devoid of a ‘wow’ performance. Simon has moved on to ‘X factor’ another such show that has been picked up by Fox and will begin shooting in autumn of next year. Whether or not Idol can move on successfully without Cowell is still left to be seen.
