Children with learning disabilities require drawing therapy, especially those with dyslexia, dysgraphia and dyscaculia. According to clinical psychologists, when simple mandala drawing is used as an intervention with proper procedure transacted with patience and consciously supported practice, it helps children with specific learning disabilities in improvement in their cognitive levels.

"The simplest mandala drawing that has symmetrical pattern features in a circle radiating outward  from its centre such as the rays of the sun, petals, circles, flowers,  repeated scrolls, etc. can be used to  develop  fine motor skills and focus attention. The simplicity of the design and use of single or two colour provides the needed benefits to children with special needs. The imitation of conventional drawing and painting as well as competitions in painting, are fads which should be avoided with such children," said Mandala drawing expert based in Faridabad who had stayed with me during Jaipur visit.

My research experience in disability education informs such drawing when used as a therapy for 20 hours for children with learning disability with demonstration, guided learning and individual practice of 3-5 simple designs improves math skills because of incorporation of sequencing of patterns, symmetry of design, recognition of basic geometric shapes and improvement in spatial skills and visual discrimination besides building their fine-motor skills and attention span.

Use of compass and scale for drawing circular mandalas can also provide the fine motor training through gripping, grasping, picking, holding and turning the geometrical instruments. However, 3-5 simple mandalas can be adapted for craft projects, vocational course and handcrafts such as quilting, cards, cut-outs, wall painting, graffiti and applique, I feel.
