Sindhis of Jaipur demand April 1 to be the dry day
The Sindhis of Jaipur have urged the Government of Rajasthan to declare Jhulelal Jayanti day to be the dry day. Sarv Sindhi Samaj has petitioned the Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje that April 1 should be declared as an alcohol-free day as its being the auspicious day of Cheti Chand on which their deity Jhulelal was born.

As per Hindu calendar, Cheti Chand falls on second day of Chaitra month and is celebrated as New Year’s Day by the Sindhis of India and Pakistan. On this day, the Sindhi people worship Saint Jhulelal as God of water. However, Sindhi culture is highly influenced by Sufi doctrines and principles. A common greeting among Sindhis is "Jhulelal Bera-Hee-Paar".

Local Sindhi groups and associations look after the interest and welfare of the Sindhi community in Jaipur. It promotes educational, spiritual and social activities amongst the Sindhis by organizing an annual fair; conduct Sindhi Language classes, organize various social, cultural, re-creational and spiritual activities; and also celebrate various festivals like Holi, Guru Jayantis, Diwali, Janmashtmi, Cheti Chand, Ram Navmi and Dada Vaswani’s birthday  among Sindhi community. Rajasthan Sindhi Academy at Subash Marg of C-Scheme in Jaipur works for the promotion of Sindhi language, literature and culture.

It may be recalled that it was in 1967, the Indian Constitution was amended to recognize Sindhi as one of its now 18 National Languages. Although Sindhi language lacks the status of an official language of any province in India, some provinces with substantial Sindhi population allow use of Sindhi as medium of instruction for school education and Board examinations
