THE INTERNATIONAL body, United Nations (UN) should take up with the Sri Lankan government, the recent drowning of a mentally weak Tamil civilian by the country's police. The shocking report that was broadcast a few days ago, shows the merciless execution of the Tamil.
This execution is one in a many which are showing how the Sri lankan armed forces are dealing with even Lankan civilians of Tamil origin, after the demise of the LTTE. They have been made into third rate citizens in their own country.
Its neighbour, India has reason to be concerned about such atrocities on Tamil citizens of Sri Lanka. While the people connect to these people due to a shared nationality in the past, the country would also face an influx of Tamil migrants, if the atrocities against them continue.
India has always acted like a big brother for Sri Lanka, lending a hand in the fight against the Tamil rebels, a move which had led to the demise of its then Prime minister Rajiv Gandhi. It is time that the Lankan government is reminded of the decades old step-motherly treatment towards the state's Tamils, which was responsible for creation of the LTTE.
