Sleeping Beauty Syndrome increases food, sex appetite says Neurologist
Kleine Levin Syndrome, also called Sleeping Beauty Syndrome, is a rare condition. A person suffering from this syndrome can sleep for 2-3 months at a stretch. Citizen Journalist Ashim Sunam spoke with Neurologist, Dr Sanjay Choudhary, to know more about the condition.

IMAGINE YOURSELF in a condition, when you can't do anything apart from sleeping. The only reason why you get out from your bed is to eat or visit the bathroom, which is essential for a human to survive. How boring and useless would your life be, if it becomes a daily routine and the same routine is to be followed for more than 2-3 months. This is the same thing that a person suffering from Kleine Levin Syndrome has to deal with everyday in one's life. A person suffering from the same sleeps day and night.

With only 1000 people on the planet found to be suffering from Sleeping Beauty Syndrome, the latest reported case, of a British teenage girl who went to sleep in April and then awoke last week, has generated much interest. Stacey Comerford, has a rare neurological disorder, and as a result she can sleep for months together, as per Sun newspaper.

Dr. Sanjay Choudhry, a neurologist in Delhi, says, “We do not see such cases in India, as it is rarest of the rare condition.” He further adds, that Kumbhakarna is a well known historical figure who also suffered from the same. Else, we would not be able to recollect any names.

The person suffering from such syndrome go to sleep every time. It does not matter what time it is during the night or the day. They always feel drowsy. They also do not have any kind of energy in them. Dr Sanjay says, “A person suffering from it would increase his desire for food along with the sexual appetite”. They eat everything that is placed in front of them on the table. They also go into a depression. Dr. Sanjay adds, “The awareness system of the body is also depressed during this stage”.

One of the most primary symptoms in such cases is Hypersomnia. They are also not in a good state of mind, as the syndrome also involves the brain. The doctor also says, “It is the brain, which is responsible for different kinds of abnormal behaviour”. They can get irritated very easily and also tend to become aggressive, which makes it worse for the people who are in the nearby surrounding, especially the family members. One of the worst aspects for this syndrome is that it does not have any proper treatment or medication. As Dr. Sanjay puts it, "There are no medicines for this syndrome”.

It is understood that it is a very rare case, but scientists who work day in and out to find new alternative medicines for Cancer and other dangerous diseases, should also put their foot forward, and see if they can come up with medicines, which will help people who are suffering from Kleine Levin Syndrome.
