Smart security apps are there for women: But how many use them?
Being in the 21st century, with technology at a higher end, the safety of women in India is still a matter of grave concern. Some cases of women's torture get reported while many cases goes reported. Although women are advancing and are proving themselves in every sector they are in. They have stood par with what man can do. Yet, she is unsafe in the midst of the patriarchal nature of Indian society.

But with the technology advancing at a high speed, and with smart phones coming in, the security of women has become a bit easier and handy. However, an important question that arises here is, though there are number of safety apps available in the market, but how many females use them. Is there enough awareness in society about these apps. 

As the smart phones have became a constant companion for many, and almost 60 per cent of urban women population is using it, they can use many safety applications available in android and other Operating Systems (OS).

Reports say that more than 5,00,000 people have downloaded the VithU: V Gumrah Initiative app, which seems to be at the first position with the maximum downloads. Following apps like Scream Alarm, Sentinel and Fightback have 10,000 plus downloads. While iFollow-Ladies safety, SOS app is used by just 1,000 plus users.

Here's the list of some smart apps helpful in providing safety and security to women.

VithU: V Gumrah Initiative

VithU is an emergency App that once installed will work just by clicking the power button of your smart phone twice. When the app gets activated, your handset will automatically send distress messages to a set of pre-defined contacts and will also send the data after every two minutes to the guardian to track the location of the victim. Apart from this the interactive app will also get updates on Crime scene in India and 'Tips feed' option, which will help you out with safety tips in an emergency situation.

iFollow- Ladies safety, SOS

If you download this app from Google play and configure few emergency numbers which would help you to avail a helping hand when you are in danger. ifollow is an app which gets activated when you shake the device for five seconds, and the app will automatically dial a voice call to the prime contacts which you have configured in the device.

iFollow will make call to your first contact person and wait for the person to answer the call. If the call is unattended, iFollow will generate an SMS with your geo location and send it to all the numbers which you have configured. It will continue to send the SMS, for every 10 meters change in the position. The specialized feature of this app is, that it will send SOS if the mobile device is in out of coverage area.

Scream Alarm

This is free safety alarm that does only one thing, as you press the button on the screen, a loud scream will come out in woman's voice in the offenders ear. It helps you in gathering some support from the neighborhood, and it can even prevent a crime scene from happening. You have to press the button again to stop the screaming.

Sentinel

This app calls itself, the world's first peoples security app. The specialty of the app is that, it can send the security alerts even if your smart phone is destroyed by the attacker. The app SMSs or emails your friends and family with your location when in danger, just with the press of a button.

Fightback

The unique feature of this app is, it uses the biggest social networking website Facebook to alert your loved ones when you are in danger. The users Facebook status will be updated with SOS message, and when the friends click on the status, they will be navigated to the web portal Alert Page and show the location of the mobile user the SOS with a time stamp. The app uses the GPS, SMS, location maps, GPRS and email facilities to give the information of your whereabouts to your loved ones.
