Smoking affects both health and general well-being adversely, suggest studies
The warning 'Smoking is injurious to health' needs to taken seriously. Smoking not only affects the body adversely but it also takes a toll of one's well-being both at the emotional and social levels.

According to research on tobacco use, it has been found that there are more than 4,000 chemical substances present in cigarette smoke itself. It has at least 50 such chemicals that can cause cancer.

Apart from the serious health consequences, smoking can also impact your everyday life or general well-being and significantly reduce the quality of life since it reduces the energy level tremendously and adversely affects one's relationships with family members, friends, neighbours and co-workers.

According to Walter S Ross, even if a single cigarette is smoked by a person, it can do the following damage him or her in the following ways:

  • Chokes airways, damage air sacs and cause breathlessness
  • Corrodes the delicate membrane of lips and palate
  • Cuts down the oxygen in the blood stream by absorbing carbon monoxide present in the cigarette smoke
  • Deposits a smelly tar to cause decay of body organs
  • Deposits dangerous chemicals like hydrocynic acid in the stomach
  • Leaves the cancer causing chemicals in the body
  • Makes heart do 15-20 extra beats per minute
  • Makes the blood clots more adhesive
  • Neutralizes the lungs' defenses and produce excess mucus
  • Raises blood pressure by about 10-20 points
  • Umpteen chemicals in the cigarette smoke like aerolein, nitric oxide, nitrogen dioxide, acetone and ammonia can harm the body badly

Another thing to be kept in mind is that there is nothing like safe level of smoking.  Even smoking cigarettes with efficient filters eliminates the risk only marginally.

Real wisdom is in not smoking or in quitting smoking!!!
