Snehbandhan: New health scheme in Assam
A new health programme 'Snehbandhan' was launched in the Block Primary Health Centres of Rangjuli and Lakhipur in order to reduce IMR and MMR. The programme was inaugurated by deputy commissioner Sri Anurag Goel.

TO REDUCE Infant Mortality Rate(IMR), Maternal Mortality Ration(MMR) and to make practice of exclusive breast feeding, National Rural Health Mission, Goalpara, Assam, launched a new health programme known as 'Snehbandhan' in Rangjuli Block Primary Health Centre and Lakhipur Block Primary Health Centre in Goalpara district of Assam.

The scheme was inaugurated by deputy commissioner Sri Anurag Goel in presence of senior health officials of the district recently. The basic idea of the scheme is to reduce IMR and MMR by keeping both the mother and the baby in hospital for at least 24 hours after delivery. For that, two sets of clothes (towels, nappies, diaper etc) would be given for the baby. Again, the practice of breast feeding, uses of ORS, importance of immunisation can also be addressed in that time period by the health workers. Deputy commissioner Goel expressed that this district level initiative carried out by District Health Society, Goalpara would be able to reduce IMR and MMR in Lakhipur and Rangjuli area. This scheme will be applicable up to two child and who opt for institutional delivery at Rangjuli and Lakhipur BPHC in Goalpara district.

Expressing hope that the new scheme would be able to improve post natal and neo natal care, Debashish K Barua, district programme manager of National Rural Health Mission, Goalpara, said, “As people are not aware of the need of fact that mother should stay in the hospital for at least 48 hours after delivery. We can assure that mother will stay in hospital for at least 24 hours after delivery under this initiative.”
