Social stigma attached to some diseases is totally unfounded and uncalled for. These diseases are leprosy, HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and mental diseases. We fear that by associating ourselves with the persons suffering from these diseases, either we would contract the disease or else come to some harm from the patients concerned.
People think that leprosy is an
abhorrent disease and is communicable so that we would become
disfigured like the patients suffering from this disease by merely
touching or nursing them but such is not the case. The bacteria of
this disease are very weak and it takes a long time of contact with
the patients to contract the disease. So, there is no harm in
touching or nursing leprosy patients. Moreover, this disease is
totally curable if detected early by use of medicines continuously.
Similarly, people suffering from
HIV/AIDS are shunned as we think that these people have committed
sins and we would contract the disease from them. However, the
disease does not spread through sinful sex only but can be contracted
on using the same syringe which has been used by a patient suffering
This is a non-communicable disease and
can be contracted through unsafe sex with a infected person only.
This disease does not spread by touching the patient or by kissing
the patient or by taking bath with the patient or eating with him.
Hence, there is no need to fear from such patients.
Tuberculosis is a communicable disease
but is completely curable. By taking good nutritious food and taking
medicines and injections regularly, it can be cured and the person
can become perfectly healthy. There is no need to develop a hate
feeling for the patients suffering from this disease and we can
actually help the patients concerned by nursing them and cheering
In so far as mental diseases are
concerned, they are absolutely non-communicable and it is only our
unfounded fear that we would develop these diseases if we interact
with patients suffering from these diseases. Of course, we need to
keep away from very violent mentally ill persons, but we should not
There are so many drugs available in
the market which can be taken on the advice of a psychiatrist. These
drugs can not only calm down violent mental patients but can also
cure all the mental diseases.
