The Socialist Party organized an indefinite relay hunger strike at Jantar Mantar on September 22 against UPA government's decision of allowing 51% FDI in retail sector. From 22 to 25th September, five members of the party continuously observed the fast for 24 hours.
THE PARTY has decided to continue its fight against the decision. The party will contact and co-operate with political parties, retail trade associations, trade unions, farmers’ unions, students’ unions to take a decisive stand against this 'anti-people and pro-multinational decision' of the UPA government. Socialist Party will participate in the protest to be held by Trinamool Congress on October 1 in Delhi.
Justice Rajindar Sachar, in an appeal yesterday had said, “Socialist Party (India) under the leadership of Professor Prem Singh, General Secretary of the party has been observing relay hunger strike at Jantar Mantar
against the government decision to permit Wal-Mart and other big retailers to open operations in India. They have rightly emphasized that this step is harmful to the economy of India
and drive to loss of occupation of at least over 4 crore of families.”
Party’s national general secretary Dr. Prem Singh emphasised that the ‘loss-benefit’ discussion that goes in mainstream media and ruling circles on this issue has no meaning. He said that it is in the benefit of the multinationals such as Walmart, Carrefour, Tesco and the ruling elite of India.
Dr. Singh blamed the Congress that it has thrown away all Constitutional and moral responsibilities to the nation. “The ‘godess of denunciation’ Sonia Gandhi and ‘demigod of honesty’ Manmohan Singh have come out in their true colors. Those who claim to be champions of socialism and social justice are playing the game of see and hide at the cost of vulnerable sections of our society who trusted them and made them powerful,” said Singh.
