Soldier arrested at Srinagar airport for carrying two live grenades in his baggage
In Srinagar, on Monday morning, an army jawan was arrested by the state police at the airport for carrying two live grenades. The soldier was taken to Humhama police station for further investigation.

As per media reports, the soldier who belongs to Darjeeling, was aware of the presence of the grenades with him and has told the police that he was carrying them to kill fish.

"We are investigating. We have sent our team to the police station. The grenade the jawan was carrying is Grenade 90. It is mostly used for exercises. The jawan's explanation is that he was carrying it to kill fish," CNN-News18 quoted army sources.

The jawan has been identified as Gopal Mukhiya of 17 JAK Rifles and serves near the Line of Control in the Uri sector of Kashmir.

As per media reports, the grenade was discovered with the soldier at the outer gate of the airport premises. The soldier was scheduled to board a flight to Delhi.

The police have refused to buy his story at face-value and have arrested him. He has been lodged at a local police station for further questioning.

"The soldier was to board a flight to Delhi. He has been detained and lodged at the local police station for questioning," the police said.

Reacting to the arrest, former chief minister Omar Abdullah wrote on Twitter that the case "tells a wider story of the problem of unaccounted weapons & ammo".
