On Thursday, at Flushing Meadows, 24-year old Indian Somdev Devvarman lost his second round match to German Philipp Kohlschreiber. Indian challenge ended in singles events in the US Open with Somdev's defeat.
THE FIRST Grand Slam campaign of 24-year old Indian Somdev Devvarman came to an end with a second round loss to 23rd seed German Philipp Kohlschreiber at Flushing Meadows on Thursday (September 3).
Somdev, ranked 162, gave a tough fight to Kohlschreiber, before the latter could advance towards victory 6-3, 6-4, 0-6, 6-2 in two hours and 48 minutes. After losing the second round match, Devvarman said that he has learnt a lot from this experience. He also said his time spent at Flushing Meadows had been 'a great experience'.
The 24-year-old from Chennai could not withstand the experienced Kohlschreiber, who has claimed some notable scalps this year including that of Novak Djokovic at the French Open.
"Qualifying for the US Open was a great breakthrough for me and then to win a match and take a set off Philipp and have some chances against him will give me great confidence for the future," Devvarman said.
"I just have to take the right steps to get better and move up the rankings - work harder, get stronger, hit the ball harder and serve better," he added.
Indian challenge ended in the singles events in the US Open with Somdev's defeat. Sania is already out of singles after suffering one of the worst defeats of her career against Italian Flavia Pennetta.
However, Indians had their share of luck in doubles events with Sania Mirza progressing to the second round in women's doubles and mixed doubles. Mahesh Bhupati and Leander Paes also cleared their first round hurdles and progressed into men's doubles and mixed doubles respectively.
