Some information on the good work done by scouts
The mission of scouting is to contribute to the education of young people, through a value system based on the scout promise and law, to help build a better world where people are self-fulfilled as individuals and play a constructive role in society.
SCOUTS MOVEMENT entering into its second century is doing amazing work in striving to create a better world at every given opportunity. Scouting while entering its second century as an influential, value-based educational movement focussed on achieving its mission, involving young people working together to develop their full potential, supported by adults who are willing and able to carry out their educational role.

The mission of scouting is to contribute to the education of young people, through a value system based on the scout promise and law, to help build a better world where people are self-fulfilled as individuals and play a constructive role in society. This is achieved by:
  • Involving the young children throughout their formative years in a non-formal educational process;
  • Using a specific method that makes each individual the principal agent of his or her development as a self-reliant, supportive, responsible and committed person;
  • Assisting them to establish a value system based upon spiritual, social and personal principles as expressed in the promise and law.
The following are a few listings of the good work done by scouts in different countries:

There are 16,000 scouts in New Zealand and this number is growing every day. At Scouts New Zealand, young people in the age group of six to 26 are equipped with life skills of problem-solving, teamwork, citizenship and healthy living. Besides these, there are a range of outdoor activities including specialised caving, photography, flying, canoe and snow schools.

The Bharat (India) Scouts and Guides were conceived by the founder Lord Baden Powell in 1907. The purpose of the movement is to contribute to the development of young people in achieving their full physical, intellectual, social and spiritual potentials as individuals, as responsible citizens and as members of local, national and international communities. The law of the scout guide covers the following:
  • A scout /guide is trustworthy.
  • A scout /guide is loyal.
  • A scout / guide is friend to all and brother/sister to every other scout/guide.
  • A scout / guide is courteous.
  • A scout / guide is friend to animals and loves nature.
  • A scout / guide is disciplined and helps protect public property.
  • A scout / guide is courageous.
  • A scout / guide is thrifty.
  • A scout / guide is pure in thought, word and deed.
In Saudi Arabia, scouting is playing a key role in opening up the country to people of other nationalities and helping to change the image of Saudi Arabia in the wider world. To achieve this scouting is working with the Centre for National Dialogue, which is an initiative of King Adbullah, who is convinced that scouting has a key role to play in making the world a more peaceful place for everyone.

In El Salvador, scouting has changed the lives of many young people over the last five to 10 years. Young people who were in gangs have turned their back on violence, creating friendship groups and finding a new way to relate to their peers. Girls that were recruited into the sex trade have been helped to find new employment and regain their self confidence and self esteem and children who are working have been given the opportunity to regain their childhood.

In the Great Lakes Region of Africa, thousands of young people have been trained as peace mediators. These young people identify and respond to conflict situations that may occur between friends, within families and in the wider communities. In countries, where there has been a history of violent, tribal conflict, these actions help to reduce tension as people are encouraged to find peaceful solutions rather than resort to violence.

The Singapore Scout Association (SSA) opened the first Scout Discovery Centre in the Asia Pacific Region on September 4, 2010.

Almost all the developed countries are encouraging scouts movement in a big way. Scouts movements are not for profit organisations and rely solely on the services of volunteers, voluntary contributions made by individuals, groups, associations and organisations caring for the society.

It is hoped scouts movement gather big momentum in making the world a better place to live in.
