Sonar Bangla needed for Bangladeshi Hindus too
It was the Indian Army that dismembered Pakistan and helped create Bangladesh. What a shame, the Muslim die-hards are forcing the Hindu minority families to leave their ancestral homes and migrate to India.
THE BENGALI Muslims of East Pakistan, now Bangladesh, were down on their knees when Punjabi dominated Army from West Pakistan who ruled the Bengalis, raped their women at will, plundered their property and kept them away from corridors of power in Dacca.

The underdog Bengali Muslims cried for help and prayed for help from Indian Army to come to their rescue. India accepted their request, went to war with Pakistan, defeated the Pakistan Army squarely and dismembered that failed state.

Bangladesh was born and people in the new-found country expressed their gratitude to India in general and the Indian Army in particular.

India thought that the new born nation would be friendly but hopes were belied. The Bengali Muslims supporting the Islamist political parties were back to their old tricks. They waylaid unsuspecting Hindu families in remote areas, killed the male members, ravished women and burnt their houses.

In 2001-02 when Khaleda Zia and her goons returned to power, they created a mayhem for the Hindu families of southern Bangladesh on the ground that the Hindus had voted for Awami League of Sheikh Hasina, daughter of Bang Bandhu and, therefore, must be punished by Kangaroo courts summarily.

The atrocities that the Hindu families suffered forced many of them to migrate to India and leave their ancestral properties to be taken possession of by the lawless mobs. India had shown her concern but that was the end of it. When a commission of inquiry was ordered, it went about collecting evidence and pinpointing the culprits.

In 2011 the present government of Sheikh Hasina is expected to bring the culprits to book. India must exercise its right as a neighbouring and friendly nation to exert pressure for speedy trial and punishment of the hoodlums so that others of their ilk do not dare indulge into those atrocities against the Hindu minority of Bangladesh.

It is an irony of circumstances that the Hindu citizens of Bangladesh are being forced to abandon their home and hearth and migrate but the illegal immigrants of Bangladesh are entering India illegally and not only securing employment but also citizenship surreptitiously. Thus, India is at the receiving end and the Hindus suffer in both the countries because of their timid attitude.

It is time all Indian political parties kept the national interests above selfish party interests and ensure that the illegal Bangladeshi immigrants are shown the door. There is no alternative to sending them out of India, that is Bharat, and ensuring that they cease to be security risk to this country.

Pamphlets and leaflets should be printed and distributed in the disturbed areas of southern Bangladesh reminding the Bengali Muslims there that it was the Indian Army that had gone to their rescue when the West Pakistan soldiers committed worst atrocities against them. India sacrificed many of its youth for the Bangladeshi nation and how ungrateful they are to put the Hindu citizens of their own country in serious trouble.

India may also remind the communal section of Bangladeshi citizenry that their co-religionists from West Pakistan had asked them to forget the Bangla language and learn Urdu.

Not only this, the Punjabi soldiers were encouraged to molest Muslim Bengali women. It was the Indian Army that saved the Bengali Muslims of the then East Pakistan from being forced to adopt the Punjabi language and Punjabi culture of the Punjabi dominated Pakistan Army. Therefore, the Bengali Muslims of Bangladesh should be grateful to the Hindus of India rather than show ingratitude by forcing their Hindu citizens to migrate to India leaving their ancestral home and hearth.

It is hoped that the present government of Sheikh Hasina would do justice to the aggrieved Hindu community. It is imperative for the Bangladesh government to take steps to reassure the Hindu minority that Bangladesh is their country too and they are at liberty to stay on where their forefathers were born, lived and made the country prosperous. When the Muslim hoodlums stop their atrocities against the Hindu minority families, it would be a golden day for the Sonar Bangla.
