Sound sleep rejuvenates mind and body
Sleep at fixed hours of a day or night helps an individual to go through the routine. Never mind if you have pressing calls to answer or urgent files to cover. These things are taken care of in the routine way.
SLEEP IS as important to a human life as possibly life-giving breath. Breathe well and remain healthy and happy. One may perfect one's breathing through exercises prescribed in the Pranayam.  Likewise sleep gives a man or a woman long life and helps all humans in living a healthy and happy life. Both Pranayam and a sound sleep rejuvenate an individual's life. Thereafter, both the sleeper and the Pranayam practitioner exclaim that life is worth living.
 
WHEN AND HOW TO SLEEP
 
To some humans who are alcoholics and do not depart from the desk except for going to the wash room, sleep is a distraction and must be kept at bay. When asked how they will recharge the dynamo that moves and motivates mind and body, they said that when they work at the table, the battery is charging itself at a hidden place. The landlord is oblivious of it. Workaholics need no vacation; if they need anything at all, it is work, work and work. No sleep, no vacation and no relaxation the conventional way. let us leave the workaholics aside for the time being.


Taking a normal man for our study of the Anthology of Sleep, we find that a man or a woman who does not get a sound sleep at night and keeps tossing in bed is likely to add to the overflowing Kuber-like treasury of his family surgeon. He will look tired, act tired and behave tired remaining short on the fuse. It goes to show that an individual, specially the Visa authorities, take a short break daily by hitting the sack and forgetting every problem and remembering only one aim: Rejuvenation through sleep. He will not be disappointed.

However, if it is not possible to sleep at fixed hours daily, choose the next best alternative and convince yourself that it would be fine in due course of time.


The quantum of sleep depends on the age, eating habit, reading habit and physical exercises that a man or a woman does. An individual who does cot bashing the whole day and doses off every now and then like the late President reagon of USA, he would never get a sound sleep for two hours at night; forget the SIX hours. In any case, a well exercised human body, a light stomachwith little food and alcohol help the man or a woman sleep well for six hours.


SAINTS AND SINNERS SLEEP DIFFERENTLY


Having spoken to saints of numerous denominations, I have reached the conclusion that they do not need to sleep for six to eight hours a day. Shri Shri Ravi Shankar Ji says that just three hours of sound sleep is good enough for him to keep going. Mind you, he maintains a hectic and punishing schedule.
 
Swami Ram Dev Ji Maharaj is no lover of sleep. Being a Yogi, he finds that a few winks of sleep at night refreshes him beyond doubt and sustains him through an international travel as well as a travel in a bullock cart on a dusty rural road. One may surmise that the Yoga Gurus are a class apart. Commoners may not be able to follow the Yogi's punishing schedule.


A Grihastha may make pre-sleep preparations. These are some simple steps to be taken. One may take a shower and change into a comfortable night apparel.. One may not eat solid food two to three hours before going to bed. Recite a Ved mantra, if you can, to collect your thought and pray "O Parmatma! Help me Banish the Evil and Imbibe the Noble".



The divine guidance will be forthcoming. Chanting AUM, close your eyes and sleep you will for six hours. When you leave the bed next morning, you will be a happy man, a rejuvenated man free from worries and ailments. Say three cheers to the science of sleep and get going to achieve your aim. Hereafter, even sky will NOT be the limit.
