South Indian films sweep the National Film Awards
The 55th National Film Awards for the year 2007 were declared on Monday in New Delhi. Adoor Gopalakrishnan was rated as the Best Director while Prakash Raj got the Best Actor award for his scintillating performance in the Tamil film Kanchivaram.
SOUTH INDIAN film industry has a lot to cheer with the announcement of the 55th National Film Award on Monday (September 7), in New Delhi.

Renowned actor Prakash Raj won the Best Actor award for his scintillating performance in the Tamil film Kanchivaram directed by Priyadarshan. The film Kanchivaram has also been declared as the Best Film of 2007. It shows the plight of silk- weavers of Kancheepuram in pre-Independent India. Prakash Raj bagged the National Award for the second time. The previous one was in the Best Supporting Actor category for Mani Ratnam’s Iruvar in 1998. This versatile actor has also been given a special jury award in 2003.

The sad demise of Andhra Pradesh CM YSR Reddy delayed the announcement of the National Award.

Adoor Gopalakrishnan, Malyalam film director, was considered the best director for his film Naalu Pennungal. The Best Actress award was given to Umashree for her sterling performance as lead role in the Kannada film Gulabi Talkies directed by Girish Kasaravalli. The film is based on the communal tension in Karnataka.

There was something for Bollywood, the largest film producing hub, to cheer as well. Chak De was declared the winner in the wholesome entertainment category while Taare Zameen Par was adjudged as winner in the family welfare category.

The film Taare Zameen Par also bagged the Best Playback Singer award for the song “Meri Maa” by Shankar Mahadevan. Prasoon Joshi got the Best Lyrics award for this song.

Anil Kapoor’s Gandhi, My Father got award for the Best Screenplay. Darshan Zariwala of the film also received award for the Best Supporting Actor. There is also a special jury award for this film which explores the troubled relationship between Harilal Gandhi and Mahatma Gandhi.
Pankaj Kapur starrer Dharm, directed by Bhavna Talwar, bagged the award for National Integration Award.

Sharad Goyekar was acknowledged as the best child actor for the film Tingya.

A total number of 102 films and 106 non- feature films were considered for the awards by the jury members Ashok Vishwanathan and Namita Gokhale headed by Sai Paranjpe.
