THE CHAIN of wonders remained uninterrupted till the final of the Euro-2008 championship, as Spain won the Euro-title after defeating the three times Euro-champion Germany by 1-0 victory at Vienna’s Ernst Happle stadium on June 29. It is the first time victory for Spain, whereas the third loss for Germany after appearing in the final match of international standard.

In 1984, Spain made their way to the final of the Euro-08, but failed to win the trophy at last. That time, France became the champion after Spain goalie missed Platini’s shot. But this time, fate for fayouring Spain right from the very onset of Euro. That’s why they lost not a single match to any teams throughout the entire tournament. It is really praiseworthy that Spain got splendid victory over all of their opponents and the same wave of continued on its same way till the final.

As both of the teams were well balanced from every side, undoubtedly a hard fight was expected by the football lovers throughout the world. The same was reflected till the final whistle of the match. At the very beginning, German striker Thomas Hitzlsperger and Ballack attempted two deadly shots, but experienced Iker Casillas, the Spanish captain as well as the goalie easily saved them. Frequent attacks were made from each side that kept the entire atmosphere oozing with excitement. In the 33rd minute, it was the Spanish striker, Torres who scored the first goal as German goalie Lehmann fell into the ground after running far from the goalpost in order to prevent Torres. As the first goal was shot by Spain, obviously, its 20000 supporters burst into cheers that engulfed the entire stadium. This unexpected incident perplexed the experienced German squad who tried their best to reply but failed to balance till the last.

The game was indeed a remarkable one, as tension and excitement were inextricably mingled throughout the 90 minutes. What all did not happen in that match? Fouls, kicks, grabbing and even bloodshed – everything had was right there. Shame to the Italian referry- Roberto Rossetti, who did not mark the fouls at the penalty box while Ballack’s and Schweinsteiger’s shot were blocked by hands of Spanish defenders. Even Rossetti did not give a foul to Senna, who intentionally attacked Ballack and fractured the right eye corner. As time was passing away, Spaniards were feeling the essence of their first victory. Luis Aragones’ strategy was found as highly effective as German strikers and midfielders completely failed to create a hole in the Spanish castle. Ramos, the Spanish defender showed excellent performance in preventing German forwards alone, whereas Lahm and Klose (Germany) proved to be nonsense after making similar mistakes continually.

The moment is indescribable in words while the final whistle was blown and Spanish players as well as the supporters rent the air through their glorious victory. On the other hand, the 30000 German supporters’ presence and hopes were drowned in the darkness of despair. Spain is the right holder of the Euro title this time as they had been proving their dexterity, team spirit, prowess and team game right from the beginning and the maintained the same until they became the champion. Madrid is now full of joy and colours, while Berlin is still waiting for another opportunity.
