But Lehmann was beaten in the 23rd minute when Torres, outjumped Per Mertesacker but saw his header come back off a post.

Last match hero, Philipp Lahm appeared to have Xavi's through-ball covered, but at the meantime hesitated as he hoped that keeper Lehmann would reach it first. But it seemed Spanish striker Torres was looking for that chance, as he cleverly lifted the ball over the advancing keeper.

A delighted Torres said, "It's a dream come true. It's our first title (together) and we hope it will be the first of many. We’ve still got the World Cup to come, we have to be ambitious. At last justice has been done because the team that played the best football and won the tournament. Dejected Germany coach Joachim Loew said, "We have to accept the quality of the Spanish side tonight and their technical ability. We're disappointed but I have to compliment my team on their fantastic performances in the last few weeks."

German Captain Michael Ballack, fit to play the Sunday’s final after calf strain, tried hard to win the match for his team but he went close with a low volley. However, his players raised the temperature of the game with a few lively tackles. Germany known for their fighting skills couldn't win the game, but they entertained the football lovers across the world with fine performance on the field.
