THE EURO-2008 final turned out what it was predicted to be - an unpredictable game. The roars from the side of supporters of Spain completely subdued the sighs of German-fans as the former emerged winners in the Euro-2008 final that was played in Ernst Happel stadium, Vienna on Sunday (June 29).

Spain beat Germany by 1-0, in a nail biting match. The victory brings an end to Spain’s 44 year long wait for a major international title. It is the first time Spain have won the European title since 1964.

The Spanish team dominated the midfield with fluent passing. Striker Fernando Torres played aggressively and was a constant threat to the German goal. Torres’ strike at the 33rd minute sealed Spain’s victory. And in the second half, though the team played very cautiously, they appeared very confident.

For Torres, the only scorer of the game, the win was a dream come true. “Victory in a Euro, is almost as big as a World Cup. I think that we have played very good football throughout the tournament and it was justice done when we won the final,” he said.

Spanish captain Cesc Fabregas was exuberant over the victory. The 21 year old midfielder said, “This is the best day of my life as a player. I don’t think we are conscious yet of what we have achieved...44 years later. It has been one of my dreams and I made it. It is true we won it in style. We were trying to create chances and play beautiful football and we have at last had the success we deserved.”

The Arsenal star was beaming with joy as he added, “I don’t know why it has taken this long and I don’t want to think about that anymore as we have achieved it and we are a young team and will fight for the World Cup in two years time.”
