Special Olympics National Championship Athletics 2014 concludes
The National Athletics Championship, which was held at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium came to an end, where 554 athletes and 152 coaches participated from 27 Indian states. The highest participation came from the state of Kerala. The competition was organized by Special Olympics Bharat along with WWE and NDMC, held from March 12-15, 2014. The athletes won 243 Gold, 236 Silver and 216 Bronze with each athlete participating in a maximum of 3 events.
The aim of the Special Olympics movement is to provide people with an intellectual disability the opportunity to realise their full potential, to experience joy and friendship and empower them to become contributing members of society. The aim of the Games is for participants to achieve their personal best and to grow skills and confidence through the entire experience.

All eight placed positioned athletes stand on a podium at medal ceremonies, where the first, second and third are provided with gold, silver and bronze respectively, while ribbons are presented for 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th positions.

There were number of athletes, who excelled in the Games. One such athlete was Hirajyoti from Assam having intellectual disabilities with associated physical trauma, looked every bit excited as he climbed the victory stand in the 1st position winning a gold at the 25 mtrs run in the National Athletics Championship. He had also won a gold in the 100 mtrs at the National Games 2013, which was held in Rajasthan in December.

‘It is just amazing wearing this track suit, a great feeling to be part of this event as part of the Karnataka delegation’, said Ankush,19yrs, having just begun his journey with Special Olympics Bharat, about three months back. An athlete from Bangalore standing tall and physically fit, he defies conditions caused by 8 minutes of asphyxia at the time of his birth. He won a gold in 10,000 mtrs.

The medalists at this Championship are shortlisted as probables for the event ‘Athletics’ (out of more than 14 sport disciplines that India will be participating in) at the Special Olympics World Summer Games to be held in Los Angeles, USA in 2015.
