SPIRIT AIRLINES pilot strike is getting complicated day by day. On Monday striking Pilots grounded the carrier again, forcing the discount carrier to cancel all its scheduled flights through Wednesday.
All offers made by the Airlines is not paying any results, pilots walked out on Saturday demanding pay equal to other Airlines. The Spirit Airlines carries about 16,000 passengers every day. Passengers are finding it difficult to cancel their tickets.
As per Spirit announcement customers can credit for future flights plus $100. Or in case they want refund they have to call the airlines ask for one. Spirit is usually the biggest carrier at Atlantic City International Airport in New Jersey. But on Monday two of its planes sat idle on the ramp, and only a few people were near its ticket counters. Privately held Spirit is based in Miramar, Fla. Its pilots walked out early Saturday, saying the company's last pay offer still wouldn't get them the same pay as pilots at other discount airlines like JetBlue Airways Corp. and AirTran Airways, a unit of AirTran Holdings Inc. Capt. Sean Creed, head of Spirit's unit of the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA), said pilots want pay similar to wages at chief competitors JetBlue Airways and AirTran Airways. Captains in Spirit earn $125 per hour and first officers earn $56 an hour whereas, captains are other discount airlines earn $168 an hour and first officers earn $90 per hour.
Misty Pinson, Spirit spokeswoman for the Miramar, Florida-based airline said earlier that the airline is canceling flights to protect customers from the impact of a strike. U.S. based low-fare carrier, Spirit Airlines handles about 20 percent of the passenger traffic at Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where it has 150 daily flights scheduled. Spirit has flights from Detroit to Atlantic City, Cancun, Fort Lauderdale, Fort Myers, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Myrtle Beach, New York, Orlando, San Juan, and Tampa.
.That voucher is not a good idea since Spirit has promised to shut down the airline if the pilots strike. Also, the wages for the pilots are misleading...pilots only get paid once the brakes are released and set again. So, in a typical ten hour day a pilot may only be paid for 5 hours (considering sits waiting for aircraft, aircraft preparation, paperwork etc. is done for free)
