FLORIDA BASED carrier, Spirit Airlines, have cancelled all flights for the day after its pilots walked out in a dispute over pay. Passengers headed to the Caribbean and Latin American from the eastern U.S. are facing problems at Fort Lauderdale Fla., airport.

Spirit is the largest single carrier with 150 flights a day from several airports in the Eastern U.S. through Fort Lauderdale. As per estimates roughly 5,000 passengers take the service of the Spirit Airlines daily.

The Spirit Airlines authority said, it was refunding fares for Saturday flights a $100 credit towards future flights. Earlier in Tuesday the Airlines said it was “patterning with other air carrier providers to continue to serve customers,” but it did not announced any immediate plan for the Saturday flights.

The striking pilots of the Spirit are demanding pay hike citing its pay is far less than competitors such as Air Tran Airways and Jet Blues pay. They are demanding pay hike since last three years.
All efforts to negotiate terms failed on Friday under the guidance of the National Mediation Board.

Sean Creed, a spirit captain and the head of the Association said in the statement, “in the end, both sides could not reach an agreement. We will not return to the cockpit until a fair and equitable contract is negotiated.

Company said it offered to raise pilot by 30 percent over five year period and four day break between every pilot trip.

Spirit President Ben Baldanza said, “We are frustrated and disappointed that our pilots have turned down an over 30 percent increase at a cost of over $70 million over five years while disrupting thousands of our customers and jeopardizing the livelihoods of our over 2,000 employees.”

Although, spirit is not a big Airliner compared to Delta Air Lines Inc, but from Fort Lauderdale it is only airlines to 14 international cities and five U.S. destinations.
