Capt. Sean Creed, head of Spirit's unit of the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA), said pilots want pay similar to wages at chief competitors JetBlue Airways and AirTran Airways. Captains in Spirit earn $125 per hour and first officers earn $56 an hour whereas, captains are other discount airlines earn $168 an hour and first officers earn $90 per hour.
Misty Pinson, Spirit spokeswoman for the Miramar, Florida-based airline said on Thursday that the airline is canceling flights to protect customers from the impact of a strike. The contract deadline is midnight Friday, after which pilots may strike or be locked out by the company as soon as 12:01 a.m. Saturday.
U.S. based low-fare carrier, Spirit Airlines handles about 20 percent of the passenger traffic at Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where it has 150 daily flights scheduled. Spirit has flights from Detroit to Atlantic City, Cancun, Fort Lauderdale, Fort Myers, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Myrtle Beach, New York, Orlando, San Juan, and Tampa.
According to the sources, negotiations between Spirit Airlines management and its pilots entered in the final stage on Friday.
