Spirit Airlines strike news - latest updates

SPIRIT AIRLINES has finally made a deal with its pilots on Wednesday which will eventually end their five-day walkout; a report from the union has popped up claiming this.

However, the union and the airline were both finalising the details of the return of the pilots to work and fly the planes which has affected the services severely. Andy Nelson, the vice chairman of the council for the Spirit branch of the Air Line Pilots Association stated that the pilots will be technically on the strike until the details are finalised by both the parties.

"Our intention is to help get the airline back up and running as quickly and efficiently as possible," he said. Spirit has cancelled all flights through Thursday.

The pilots of the Spirit Airlines staged a protest and walked out on Saturday demanding a pay that was similar to the pilots of other discount airlines like JetBlue Airways Corp. and Airtran Airways.

The strike affected the Spirit Airlines on money as well as brand front as well, yet the airline had said that it intended to fly through any job action.

That was not to be as many of the customers remained stranded with a limited ability to use their tickets on other airlines.

Spirit carries roughly 16,000 passengers per day, or about 1 percent of the nation's air traffic. Its biggest hub is in Fort Lauderdale, with flights to U.S. cities including Detroit and Atlantic City, N.J., as well as the Caribbean and Latin America.

Spirit is privately held and based in Miramar, Fla.

Airline strikes are considered to be rare in the US where the federal rules make it very tough for strikers to strike. The federal rules are intended to keep the public transportations smoothly running. The last strike at a major carrier was when mechanics struck at Northwest Airlines beginning in 2005.
