I ONCE went to interview an `enlightened soul’ and got to meet the `operations’ guy who told me `we believe in giving back to the society and earn in the process’. A truly altruistic motive, I must say. The gentleman gave me a `once over’, apprised and dismissed me as somebody who was not immaculately dressed. For he believed that he could do good to the society and still drive a Scorpio while his boss drove a Merc! (Those were his words). While his intentions were noble, somewhere in the process the gentleman missed out on the main point of `enlightenment’ – HUMILITY- which goes a long way in the process of `self- realisation’. I have no bone to pick with him. He is entitled to his beliefs and me to my own. But let us just think for a moment.
What is this `enlightened soul’ mean? Is it about donning an ochre garb and doing the severe rigours of penance. Or is it something more about doing good selflessly without expectations or remunerations. Can self realization happen in a workshop or is it a continuous process of internal dialogue, an introspection of self. An analysis that constantly helps us to question our own motives.
This article is not about morality or
spirituality. Rather, this is about being a good human being. A Medha Patkar for instance. A truly enlightened soul. . She believes and works for this belief. Honestly all of us cannot become `Medhas’. But let us be our own `conscience keepers’. Let us start in a small way.
In the eyes of God all creatures are equal. Let us not do something to others that we would not want to be done to ourselves. Every individual needs to be treated with dignity and respect. Somewhere along the way we seem to have forgotten about this. In this race to achieve, we have forgotten to pause and admire the beauty of simple things.
We take things for granted. Our house-helps (I refuse to call them servants. For there is truly only one Master.), our children, our parents, our friends, our spouses, our co-workers…… the list is endless. Why go for religious discourses or rejuvenating, inspirational retreats when the distillation process can happen within through systematized discrimination of rights and wrongs. God has given us the sixth sense called discretion which we indiscreetly have put on the back burner. So to keep up with the Joneses, we seem to be selling our soul to routine of living. We seem to be caught in this web of mundane existence that we fail to strive for something that God wants to give us – alleviating the soul from the mere existential to the sublime.
So let us all keep our Scorpios, Mercs, Color Pluses, Noikas and Nikes. But let us also learn humbleness in the process. It is this feature that will help us keep in touch with our soul that connects with our Creator. The great persona who created the most humbling creature called Human Being.
