Now sports seem to be the ticket for direct entry into the world of modeling and cricketers make more money through advertising and modeling. A time would come when actually we will have to think whether to call them sports star or glam stars.
SPORTS IN India have always been worshipped, especially cricket. Earlier cricketers were honoured only for their talent whereas today more than talent, looks and X factor weigh more. Had this always been the case, then a star cricketer like Kapil Dev would have never got public attention if he belonged to this generation.
Now cricket seems to the ticket for direct entry into the world of modeling and cricketers make more money through advertising and modeling. How much runs has Dhoni scored in a certain match rarely makes news but what new haircut he is sporting or what bike he is posing for, definitely makes news. Or for the matter of fact, how many Bollywood heroines Yuvi has dated and of course a chotamota research on the present one. Sachin Tendulkar, Saurav Ganguly and Virender Sehwag are no exceptions. In our country, no other sports have been hyped like cricket, until today, when tennis and boxing are being given little weight. Have people learnt the game overnight? Or it because of tennis sensation Sania Mirza and boxing champion Vijender attracting eye balls? Sania’s nose ring and killer attitude and style and Vijender’s good looks are actually the reasons.
Today most of the sports stars have deviated their focus towards glitz and glamour. They endorse sexy range of clothes or stylish jewellery, which by far has nothing to do with sports. Sports and entertainment were two separate worlds but are coming closer now. In filmi chatshows, Irfan Pathan or Vijender or any sports personality is no alien. Don’t be surprised if next time Bhajji instead of Rakhi Sawant performs the inauguaral dance in any Bollywood award function.
Is there really any need of blending entertainment with a serious thing like sports? Dedication is important to reach excellence. And India expects them to do what they are best known for. Sports people have their panache, they don’t need to step in glamour world to get attention. A time should not come when actually we will have to think whether to call them sports stars or glam stars.
