Basil Rajapaksa, special adviser of Sri Lankan president met external affairs minister Pranab Mukherjee on Sunday and assured the Indian government the safety and security of Tamil inhabitants living in the island country.
THE SRI Lankan administration on Sunday (October 26) assured the Indian government the safety and security of Tamil inhabitants living in the island country. The concerned officials of the Sri Lankan administration also planned to consider the Indian medical aid to the affected Tamils in the country’s trouble-torn northern region.
In this regard, Basil Rajapaksa, special adviser of Mahinda Rajapaksa, the Sri Lankan president, met Pranab Mukherjee, the external affairs minister of India. Rajapaksa assured him that his government has already taken necessary steps to ensure the rights of Tamil inhabitants in Sri Lanka, which he said would not be compromised at any cost though there is an ongoing military crackdown against the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). Rajapaksa also had talks with Shivshankar Menon, the foreign secretary of India today morning regarding this issue. Rajapaksa is the brother of president Mahinda Rajapakasa. Mukherjee rushed to Chennai on Sunday (October 27) to meet M Karunanidhi, the chief minister of Tamilnadu. Probably, he would also apprise the CM of Tamilnadu about the safety and well-being of Tamils in Sri Lanka.
The top brass officials of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) considered Mukherjee as the right person to send to Chennai. Sonia Gandhi, the UPA chairperson also informed Karunanidhi over telephone, who thanked the UPA government for taking prompt actions.
