Sri Lanka presidential election: Mahinda Rajapaksa takes early lead
Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa took an early lead against former chief of army staff General (retired) Sarath Fonseka in Presidential election in Sri Lanka.
SRI LANKAN PRESIDENT Mahinda Rajapaksa took an early comfortable lead against former chief of army staff General (retired) Sarath Fonseka in Presidential election in Sri Lanka. Latest news about Mahinda Rajapaksa is that he had 723,362 votes so far and Fonseka had 460,725.
 
According to the Sri Lankan election office, over seventy percent voters exercised their right to franchise in Tuesdays presidential election. Except some incidents and a couple of blasts in Jaffna election was very peaceful after more than two decades of bloodbath in Sri Lanka.
 
President Rajapaksa with his family cast his vote on Tuesday morning at the Madhumalana Rajapaksa Maha Vidayalaya polling centre at the rural Mulkirigala in the deep southern district of Hambantota.
 
President Mahinda Rajapaksa called the election two years ahead of schedule to capitalise on his popularity for bringing peace in the country. Former army chief Sarath Fonseka is equally credited for the victory. He commanded the Army to defeat the rebels from 2006 to 2009.
 
Including Mahinda Rajapaksa and Sarath Fonseka, 22 candidates are in the election fray for Sri Lanka sixth presidential election.
