Sri Lankan army captures Jaffna

THE SRI LANKAN armed forces finally captured the last remaining area of Jaffna on Wednesday (January 14), defeating the rebel Tigers. The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Elam (LTTE) influenced Jaffna is now completely under the control of the Sri Lankan government.

Thiru, a senior LTTE leader was gunned down by the Lankan troops during the operation. The Lankan army captured 400 anti personnel mines, 40 anti tank mines and 100 boats, while capturing the strategic Chundikulam area.

Citing this military operation as one of the major blows to the LTTE, Uday Nanayakkara, the military spokesperson said that Jaffna is now completely liberated from the LTTE influence. Nanayakkara also confirmed that though lot of rebel Tigers were killed in this operation, not a single Lankan military lost life.

The Lankan army captured the Elephant Pass, the gateway to the Jaffna peninsula just five days ago. After losing Jaffna, the LTTE rebels are now said to have been left with only one stronghold in Mullaitivu. The Lankan armed forces have already advanced towards Mullaitivu to combat the remaining rebel Tigers. The Lankan fighter jets are conducting air-raids and bombing on the LTTE hide-outs there
