AFTER SUFFERING a humiliating series loss at the hands of India, there is a tumult in the Sri Lankan cricket after captain Mahela Jayawardene decided to step down as the skipper of the island nation’s team on Wednesday (February 11).
As per reports, Jaywardene met the national selection committee and told them of his decision to step down from the top post. He has remained as the Sri Lankan captain for three years and is one of the most successful Test captains the country ever had.
Jaywardene has decided to resign as captain after the coming two-Test tour to Pakistan, which is beginning on February 21. In a statement issued today, Jaywardene said that he had decided to step down after the Pakistan tour in the best interest of the team.
He said that he had taken this decision keeping in mind that the next captain should have at least 18 months at top before the next world cup scheduled in 2011. He also said that this was the right time for the fresh leadership to take over and build a team.
