What Other Nations Do For their People
Cyprus has people of two nationalities, Greeks and Turks. In 1974, the Greek majority (80%), with the aid of the Military Junta in Greece staged a coup and took over power. In response, Turkey launched a military invasion to protect the interest of Turkish Cypriots. Cyprus is now divided into two parts, Greek Cyprus and Turkish Cyprus. 60,000 Turkish Cypriots moved to the north to escape persecution by Greeks. Cyprus has been at peace ever after.
Georgia, South Ossetia and Abkhazia are two regions of Georgia with a large population of ethnic Russians. Both regions wanted political autonomy from Georgia and had launched independence struggles. The Russians supported the struggles. Russian President Dmitry Medvedev stated that he would "protect the life and dignity of Russian citizens wherever they are".
In 2008, Georgia launched full scale military operations against South Ossetia to regain control of the territory. The Russians immediately intervened with their naval and ground forces. Within five days, the Georgian forces were defeated and withdrew.
Falklands is a tiny group of islands near the southern tip of South America with a population of a few thousand. It has been claimed by Britain, France and Spain and later Argentina. Britain re-established its control over the islands in 1833 and decided to colonize it in 1840 with the induction of 50 settlers which increased to 200 by 1849. The population has since expanded to a few thousands. Argentine forces invaded and occupied the islands in 1882. The British government dispatched its forces to retake the islands. The resulting conflict lasted 74 days and ended with the Argentine surrender which returned the islands to British control. 255 British military men died to protect a few thousand settlers of British origin.
Prime Minister David Cameron has warned Argentina that Britain would always be ready to defend British citizens in the remote Falkland Islands.
Conclusion
It is a shame that in spite of the historical precedences quoted above, the Indian Government is unwilling to protect the Sri Lankan Tamils who are ethnic Indians and allows the Sri Lankan Armed Forces, Government and the Sinhala majority to commit all kinds of atrocities on the hapless Tamils.
Is the Congress Government trying to punish the Tamil people for the death of a member of the Gandhi family? Or are we being ruled by a bunch of cowards who have no national pride and are ready to be bullied by all our neighbours and non state actors?
The Indian Government is like an old elephant. It is afraid to fight. It cannot see the realities of the world. It is thick skinned. It does not feel humiliations heaped upon it by its neigbours including the tiny Maldives, tiny countries like Italy, Denmark and Switzerland and terrorist organizations. India is a soft nation with the second largest population, the fourth largest economy and the fourth largest armed forces in the world. It has the largest youth population in the world. Yet it cannot fight to defend its own people. It cannot even deploy its navy and coast guard to protect Tamil fishermen.
Are there any volunteers from the Tamil people, the proud, patriotic and young Indians who are willing to fight for the Sri Lankan Tamils and throw out the cowardly Indian Government who helplessly watch the erosion of national pride and atrocities on its own people?
