BCCI HAS decided to give one year extension to K. Srikkanth in his role as a chief selector of the Indian cricket team. Some former cricketers have said that the BCCI should have removed him from the post. Kapil Dev was very vocal about it and wanted Anil Kumble to be included.

One may say it was wise enough decision taken by the BCCI to still hang on to Kris Srikkanth, who has been selecting the best available team for all International tournaments. It was under his tenure as chief selector, when India won the World Cup 2011. He was appointed as the Chief selector of the team in 2008.

Had the Indian team not performed during the World Cup, he would have definitely been removed from his post. He had taken tough decisions while selecting that team as Rohit Sharma was selected ahead of many players, which had got mixed reaction. But all his choices proved right. But the recent team that had travelled to England has brought the attention towards team selection. All fingers were pointing towards Srikkanth, but it is not his fault, when players do get injured midway during the series.

It is rather surprising that a person like Kapil Dev wanted him to be axed from his post. It is understood that he wants some new faces, but why a new face when the old face is doing good in his job? It would be unfair on the part of BCCI to remove him just because the Indian team had a bad tour recently. They must remember that India has had a good season until the English tour under Srikkanth’s selection of the Indian team.

Kapil Dev wanted Kumble to be given a greater role in the BCCI. It has to be remembered that a great cricketer need not necessarily mean a good administrator. He may understand the players, but the job requires much more than just knowing these players personally. Sometimes this bond with the players may prove to be a negative factor too.
