SRK Power, lighting up our lives!
Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, although a tad too long at almost three hours of running time, is a surprise package from the Adi-YRF-SRK house. It marks the birth of a new hero, in its ordinariness made extraordinary. At the end of it, it is the SRK magic all the w
THE KIND of hype that the phenomenon called SRK can create is well-discerned from the fact that at every other standalone theatre where his films hit, his huge cutouts end up liberally garlanded by fans as early as day one... a phenomenon I had often heard of, and witnessed myself this time. The shows at Menoka (Kolkata) a week after the release and on a regular weekday were house-full, credit crunch or no crunch.

In fact, the entry queue snaked all around the theatre and by the time we made it inside, the opening credits had almost rolled to an end. This means, by all that is woeful, I missed the trailers.

Saying all that was necessary because Rab Ne... is essentially an SRK movie through and through. Newcomer Anushka as ’Tani’ is pretty and spontaneous, has a perfect figure and can probably hold her own against any hero. Vinay Pathak as ’Bobby’ is the funny faithful sidekick, and ’Rab’ is of course, omniscient and almighty. All said and done, it is Surinder "I work for Punjab Powers" Singh who steals the show and steals your heart.

As you must have found out by now, if you live on this face of the earth and have properly functioning faculties that is, Surinder is an average boring middle class working guy who lands up with the vivacious and recently-tragedy-hit Tani as his wife, jise pehli baar dekhte hi use lobh ho gaya tha. So like Punjab Power lights up the lives of its customers, he goes about lighting up the life of Tani, who is an embodiment Dhoom 3 (one of the best most hilarious sequences in the film!).

How: Very subtly and sweetly, as the dapper Suri, and very boldly and grandly as the outrageous Raj (naam to suna hi hoga?) Why: Because although Tani promises to be a good housewife, she cannot bring herself to love Suri as all the love in her has died. While Raj sweeps her off her feet and puts the smile back on her round face, largely via the ’Have feet, will dance’ competition, Suri tries feebly to match up to the expectations created by his own Raj.

Eventually the "mere liye to yehi pyaar hai, isse jyaada ki na ummeed hai na zarurat" equation changes to "pyaar to use Surinder-I-work-for-Punjab-Powers se hi karna parega", Raj proposes and Tani agrees to elope, and Suri fights a Sumo wrestler.

In the nick of time, Rab intervenes, Tani is granted enlightened vision (seriously!) and she refuses Raj (who is, of course, immensely delighted within) because "mujhe mere pati mein rab dikhta hai". Anyways, the eventual revelation does happen – it’s not quite hard to figure out, but the climax is still a surprise package! It’s where the Adi-SRK-YRF magic is at its peak... and although the ridiculous medley with the guest appearances (four stars to Rani for the fab look and performance) wins the visual impact award, the dancing jodi track is otherwise the best! And watch out for Suri’s commentary and the honeymoon snapshots alongside the end credits... the too long running time of almost three hours becomes totally worthy at this point! A big round of applause here please…

To enjoy this fantastic movie, you must however be willing to overlook certain obvious contradictions, such as Tani not being able to recognise her husband as Raj whereas the jolly burly paaji of Raju motors has no trouble doing so, and Suri getting nothing but a cut on his forehead after being hurled to the ground half a dozen times by Yokozuna’s twin (whom he defeated, by the way!). Also, I would find it impossible to believe that one of those brilliant nerdy industrious students we hear about who do nothing wrong and grow up to be government employees could have the potential for such extraordinariness, imagination, and romance, if it hadn’t been SRK. Raj as a foil to Suri is, of course, way too familiar but manages to be just about enough irritating so you don’t hate his ‘the end’: Macho or no macho!

The truth is that Rab Ne... is a surprise from the Adi-SRK-YRF in that it makes you sit up and take notice. It is the birth of a new hero, it is ordinariness made extraordinary. The greater truth is that no one but SRK could have pulled this off. It is SRK Power all the way, lighting up your life ji!
