Five girls were killed and more than 30 students injured in a stampede at Senior Secondary Delhi school at Khajuri Khas in north east Delhi. Police officials, who rushed to the scene said that they were investigating the reasons behind the accident.
TRAGEDY STRUCK at a Senior Secondary Delhi school at Khajuri Khas in north east Delhi, when five girls were killed and more than 30 students injured in a stampede on Thursday morning (September 10). The stampede was caused after a rumour spread that there was current in school walls and any one touching these could get electrocuted.
As soon as the students heard the rumour, panic spread and children rushed out of their classes and many of them were injured on the narrow staircase of the school. Police said that the tragic incident happened when students were asked to vacate their class rooms due to waterlogging caused by the incessant rain, which has lashed the national capital since last evening.
Most of the students were caught in the narrow staircase of the school, where most of them received the injuries and five of them fatally. The students were taken to GTB hospital in north Delhi and it is expected that Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit will visit the injured children.
Police officials, who rushed to the scene said that they were investigating the reasons behind the accident. They did not confirm whether the stampede was caused by a rumour or there was any other reason behind the accident, which claimed the lives of five school girls.
The incessant overnight rain has thrown life out of gear in Delhi and National Capital Region with most of the roads flooded with with water.
