A stampede in a Government school in Khajuri Khas, New Delhi took place yesterday morning, after a rumour of a short-circuit spread. The schoolchildren who had come to give their mid term papers got hurt, running up and down a narrow staircase.
AT LEAST five girls died and 27 were injured due to a stampede in a government run school in Delhi on Thursday (September 10). The unfortunate incident took place at the Government Boys and Girls Senior Secondary School in Khajuri Khas.
According to initial reports, the rain driven stampede took place during the mid term exams of the students. They were allegedly asked to leave the premises as rumours had spread about the knee deep waterlogged campus premises being charged with electricity. Other reports say that they were asked to change classrooms.As the students tried to make their way up and down a narrow staircase, the stampede occurred. Out of the 27 that have been injured, 26 are girls. The victims and the injured are reportedly between the ages fourteen to eighteen.
According to a police officer from Khajuri Khas poice station, 40 children were being moved from one section of the school to another.The injured were taken to the Guru Tegh Bahadur Hospital. The school was badly flooded due to heavy rains that took place in Delhi on Wednesday. It was due to this flood, that rumours of electrical short circuit started spreading.The area was cordoned by the police after angry parents and locals tried to enter the premises but remained unsuccessful. Delhi Chief Minister, Sheila Dikshit rushed to the hospital, where the injured were admitted. She was accompanied by Education Minister Arvind Singh Lovely.
