Calling upon the media to take an urgent and unambiguous stand against terror, television journalist, Arnab Goswami said that any ideology that hides behind gun culture is no ideology at all.
LEADING TELEVISION journalist , Arnab Goswami has called upon the media to stand up against militancy saying any ideology that hides behind the gun culture is no ideology at all. He made this plea, while delivering a lecture on “The Challenging Face of Terrorism and the Role of Media” in Guwahati, the capital of India’s northeastern state of Assam.
Coming down heavily on the ULFA, Goswami said the outlawed outfit was taking the silence of the people for granted. He said that the apologists for militant outfits had made a great mistake in the past by seeking sovereignty, because that has set an unacceptable trend.
He said that he regretted that the ‘collective opposition’ by the media that could have checked militancy from attaining its present status in the northeastern region of India wasn’t forthcoming.
Arnab Goswami also rued that the north-east is still being neglected by the mainstream media. He said that the main role of the media is to highlight chinks in the security establishment as well as the government, referring to the virtual gag imposed by the government on the media after the 26/11 terror attack in Mumbai. He further called upon all concerned to take a united stand against terrorism. Goswami also said that the media had an increasingly important role to play in the near future.
