I DO not venture out in Delhi everyday, and that perhaps makes me sensitive o things which one would not notice. Found in abundance, these are things to which the common man has become immune and has a casual attitude. But to me these speak volumes about our society, culture, behavior, attitude, sense of self respect and much more.
One such thing is The Holy Cow.
You see them all along your travel route, undernourished, many eating up polythene bags piled high on stinking waste heaps found almost on every-kilometer. The sight draws both anger and pity. You cannot help wondering if this is our Holy Cow, so much revered by Hindus? The animal is worshipped as mother.
One finds many showing respect to the Holy Cow by throwing before them some stale bread. The plight of the animal fails to move them.
I wish, we, the Hindus turn a little more sensitive and stop making such a blatant public show of the way we carry our faith and show respect to our Holy Cow.
I would suggest that we reorganise things and build more cow shelters. We must raise funds for their healthy and safe upkeep. Not just money, volunteers must come out and provide free services for looking after the old animal. These cow shelters’ management bodies must ensure that the old and sick cows are brought here rather then captured municipal bodies.
Do we require government funds for this purpose?
I strongly believe that disrespect to the Holy Cow is disrespect to the
Hindu religion. Come forward and show that you respect your religion.
