Statesmen and Secrecy: the direction of democracy in India?
Democracy is the most cherished aim of Indian Constitution. The wheels of democracy are statesmen, who pull the cart to its destination. Where are the statesmen directing democracy?
DEMOCRACY IS the most cherished aim of Indian Constitution. A people’s government elevating their freedom and livelihood is what is expected from a democratic government. The wheels of democracy are statesmen, who pull the cart to its destination. What if the wheels are broken or drive the cart out of track?
It is not new that Indian statesmen indulge in secret scams and threatening acts. Recently, newspapers and media were continuously following the hush-hush of illegal activities led by statesmen. A recent land grab act by a senior DMK leader Veerapandi S. Arumugam as accused No.1 symbolises the shameful truth of coercive and threatening nature of most Indian Statesmen. The other accused are leading businessmen. This also throws light on the increasing connections between the state and corporate sector. The corporate people utilize politicians according to their will and wish, giving them crores of rupees in return for their cooperation.
The question naturally arises that who are the statesmen working for: A people’s democracy or self supremacy?
On observing the list of recently busted scams and scandals, the prime accused are cabinet members of the centre or state governments and most senior leaders of ruling parties. 2G spectrum scam, Commonwealth games, IPL, Tiwari’s sex scandal and also older cases like the Telgi scam, bofors scam, Hawala scandal, fodder scam etc. highlight the role of leading politicians. These are only a few that have been unearthed, no one knows how many are still hidden. Corruption has become a defining feature of Indian government and Indian Democracy. The power and influence are misutilized. Politics has turned into a high drama and money making market, losing its efficiency and essence.
It is such a painful thing that people re-elect the same governments, same leaders repeatedly. Of course, they are left with no choice. Whoever enters earns and leaves. Democracy has to be revived. Secret lives of politicians have to be unfolded. Stringent action has to be taken by officials without yielding to any threat or force. Statesmen, who have to direct democracy, are leading the nation into chaos. An immediate action is necessary.
