Step-motherly treatment meted out to NRIs in India
Vayalar Ravi, a minister advised Indian women to refrain from marrying NRI men in America and Canada. The NCW is proposing that NRIs should disclose their salary, etc which would hurt the privacy of the prospective bridegrooms.
EARLIER, NON Resident Indian (NRI) men were held in high esteem by the government of India. The country was able to increase its foreign exchange reserves mainly due to the export of manpower and technical expertise.
But the status of NRI’s are changing fast. It’s evident from the recent remark by India’s minister for Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi. He told people back home, “Don’t marry Indians in America, including Canada,” according to a press release in a website.
Further, the National Commission for Women (NCW) is also proposing to the government of India to have specific laws related for the NRIs.
If this law is implemented, it would cause a lot of hardship for NRI men. Some of the provisions of this law include that prior to getting married a NRI man should disclose his salary, employment and all other details to the prospective bride and her family, which means that an NRI should make public all his confidential details.
