Stephen Hawking: A brush with God
This science prodigy Stephen Hawking, at the age of 21, was diagnosed a victim of wasting disease ALS which is also known as Motor Neuron Disease. But he is a man, who has refused to accept defeat and wants the world to know him as a scientist.
STEPHEN HAWKING, a journalist called him ‘Master of Universe’. For others he is ‘Einstein’s heir’, ‘the greatest genius of twentieth century’ and ‘the finest mind alive’. This science prodigy, at the age of 21, was diagnosed to be a victim of wasting disease ALS which is also known as Motor Neuron Disease. He is doyen of Cosmology which is a combination of Physics and Mathematics. It is the study of universe at large, its beginning, its evolution and its ultimate fate. Cosmology uses the information about universe collected with the help of giant telescopes and space probes. A cosmologist has to take help of large computers to carry out his calculations. The cosmological ideas can be expressed in terms of mathematical equations and it needs the brain more than the machines. It was Albert Einstein who had invented the Theory of Relativity which is the product of Science of Theoretical Cosmology. In 1967, Jocelyn, a graduate student of Cambridge University invented the pulsar- a celestial object which is rapidly spinning neutron star. It emits intense bursts of radio waves at regular intervals and defined as collapsed objects at the verge of becoming Black Holes. Stephen Hawking has been working on the Theory of Black Holes since 1965.
He achieved fame and recognition with the publish of his book ‘The Brief History of Time’ and the BBC Televison series ‘Hawking's Universe’.
Stephen Hawking was never known to be a religious man. In December 1988, Hollywood actress Shirley MacLaine asked Hawking if he believed that there is a God, who created the universe and guides the creation. He smiled momentarily and replied in his metallic voice, ‘no’. However, in the book ‘A Brief History of Time’, Hawking was more open to the idea of God, suggesting that a scientific understanding of the universe was not incompatible with a creator. "If we discover a complete theory … it would be the ultimate triumph of human reason – for then we should know the mind of God." But in his new book ‘The Grand Design’ he concludes that science excludes the possibility of a deity and that it is unnecessary to ‘invoke God to light the blue touch paper and set the universe going’.
While the world has always respected and admired his ideas and theories he is at the tangent with the God fearing mortals of the world.
The very first among them, the Lord Sacks, a renowned Rabbi, as an ‘elementary fallacy’ of logic.
Writing in a leading publication, the chief rabbi said, "There is a difference between science and religion. Science is about explanation. Religion is about interpretation.” Sacks also said the mutual hostility between religion and science was one of the curses of our age and warned it would be equally damaging to both. But there is more to wisdom than science. “It can’t tell us why we are here or how we should live. Science masquerading as religion is as unseemly as religion masquerading as science", he added.
