A touch of 'Asal' Pune-lined with shops and stalls on both the sides, Laxmi Road is one place in Pune where one can really experience the true hustle and bustle that pumps through the city.
IT IS said “Variety is the spice of life”. In fact, every place it is said is known by its people, its food and the bazaars around it, which form an important and integral part of the civilized world. A walk around the narrow lanes of Pune and and one gets to see the hustle and bustle of open air markets. And one of the best places to have such a lifetime experience is Laxmi Road and in fact, no other place in Pune can beat the narrow laned markets of Laxmi Road.
Embroidered dress pieces, fancy dresses of all shapes and designs and many even inspired by latest Bollywood flicks can be seen on the shelves and hung up in the display areas of these shops. In fact, during my visit to this place, I noticed that this market serves is common shopping ground as for people across all classes and strata of society.
The moment I stepped into Laxmi Road, my senses were assaulted by the sight, smell and feel of the place. The vibrancy of the place strikes you as you notice the colours surrounding you and not just on the goods but the people there too. The hustle and bustle on this road, the endless chattering by everybody around and the ongoing activities of a roaring, full fledged business and trade day lets one get a real feel of street shopping at its best. In fact, getting deeper into the lanes, the lure of getting exclusive items gets more and this way the interest levels rise. With rows and stretches of all types of items everywhere around, in every possible nook and corner, the amazement never palls in Laxmi Road. This heartland shopping mart of Pune can well be compared to any other open markets of India like Janpath, Sarojini and Lajpat Nagar markets of Delhi and Fashion Street of Mumbai.

Satish Sule, who owns a shop specialising in ladies garments says, “We bring in churidar-kurta, salwar kameez, choli-lehengas of the latest fasion and trends and also specially designed Bollywood style sarees and they are a huge rage amongst my customers. I have loyal customers of even 15 years and such is the satisfaction of these customers that immediately when a new trend is out they visit my shop to check it out”.
Serving as the ideal location for traditional shopping, the atmosphere of this market makes a visit here a unique experience. Particularly famous are the Pochampalli, Kanjeevaram and heavily done georgette sarees which are available in variety of colours ranging from bright hues to darker shades, intricately printed or embroidered everything the female heart desires is available here. Jewellery and imitation seconds the list and the skilled work on them is pretty famous and appreciated by the women folk. Retaining a blend of traditionalism as well as modernity, the jewellery of this place is well known across major shopping circles of India.
