Student suicides in coaching hub Kota unabated, official stress-buster measures of no avail
Despite, the measures of helpline, counselling and stress-relieving sessions by coaching centres at Kota in Rajasthan, yet another student in the city hanged himself, raising the death toll to seven this year so far.

The measures taken by district administration after umpteen rounds of meetings and formation of committees and their recommendations seem to have been just superficial. Not only the suicide rate as gone up, but brawls between the teenagers in competitive environment who deem one another as rivals have also increased.

Every year, around one lakh students arrive in Kota, many of them as young as 13-14 years to live in the city to prepare for competitive examinations.

"The measures taken by the district administration seem to have failed. In fact, they were meant to be failed. In the cut-throat competitive environment; elimination nature of entrance examinations; pressure of studies; expectations of parents; realigning of students through internal examinations of coaching centres; lack of emotional security; rivalry; loss of self-esteem due to poor performance in frequent teats; mental fatigue caused by type of coaching and assignments are the factors that are taking the toll," said Jaipur-based educator Prabha Kishore.

There is a need to counsel parents that the entrance examinations are not the selection tests, rather they are elimination or screening tests for which even students who prepare on there own with the available resource material have the same chances of success as they have with the coaching. If, one goes by the records of the coaching centres, they create the batches on the bases of their own tests, but there is spastically insignificant change during the reshuffling of the batches.
