Student unions, politics corrupting the campus
Student councils should have students nominated on basis of academic and co-curricular performance. Unless elections are erased from the walls of colleges, one cannot have an academic atmosphere or academic union on campus.
SCHOOLS AND colleges need a positive environment so that we may call them temples of education. Alas! The temple is being desecrated; corrupt politicians’ and politics is making it polluted.

There can hardly be two opinions about the fact that the student unions stand to serve a great educational purpose –but – the lamentable fact is that during the past three decades, rapid politicisation has made the student unions stray from the objectives they were designed for. Today’s student union is a chess board – for the game of personal interest of certain political parties or individuals.

Politicisation of campus takes place in different ways. Generally, political parties and their leaders play an active role in providing a political orientation to the temple of learning. Any issue connected with campus gets converted into a political issue and any violence that erupts on campus leads to strikes, protests and further violence at the behest of politicians.

Men, old enough to be uncles and dads can still be seen in colleges, just like old time Hindi heroes, obviously not to study but to contest elections to be the President or Secretary of the student union – and the money and muscle power provided to them by sections with vested interests i.e. the politicians watch from the ranks.

Every political party has its student wing in some cases we find reports of such wings getting regular funding from political patrons. And every political party ensures that there is no peace on the campus. Recently UP High Court Allahabad placed certain restrictions on Student Councils. Which was eventually followed by more violence, more strikes, more protests and demand was never for better education, better teacher, better infrastructure – it was for just elections!

Unless teaching community takes responsibility of alienating students from their violent means to build real students, the goal of education will be hindered by violence. Student councils should have students nominated on basis of academic and co-curricular performance. Unless elections – the dirty word is erased from the walls of campus of colleges, one cannot have an academic atmosphere or academic union on campus.
