The research was earlier conducted on pregnant women and the drugs under research included paracetamol, a common drug used throughout the world. And the researchers concluded that all the drugs under study were seen to have a severe impact on the testicles of male babies.
The researchers conducted the research on a group of 31 volunteers (all male) aged between 18 and 35 years. The group was divided into two parts: one consisting of 14 volunteers and the other of 17 volunteers. The first group was given a daily dosage of ibuprofen while the second group was given placebo. The volunteers of group 1 showed signs of dysfunctional testicles.
The authors of the study have reportedly said that the drug disrupts male hormones and increases the likelihood that the affected male babies would be born with congenital malformations. When milder drugs show their impact on pregnant women and their foetuses, the researchers increased the subjects of the study to adults and selected ibuprofen as the drug to be tested as it has a strong impact.
As per the researchers, when used for a short time, ibuprofen has reversible effects but in the longer run, it is not known whether the effects are reversible or irreversible. And in men with naturally lower fertility, the effects could be even worse.
And now that we know that ibuprofen can be harmful for blokes' nuts, are we still nuts enough to continue using this nutcracking drug?
