Study report on sexual orientation and gender identity based bullying to be launched in Chennai
UNESCO, as the United Nations' specialized agency for education, has been entrusted by the United Nations to lead and coordinate the Education 2030 Agenda consisting of 17 Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. Consequently, UNESCO holds, "Education, essential to achieve all of these goals, has its own dedicated Goal 4, which aims to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all. The 'Education 2030 Framework for Action' provides guidance for the implementation of this ambitious goal and commitments."

"All  forms  of  violence  and  bullying  in  schools  infringe  the  fundamental  right  to  education  and  unsafe  learning environments reduce the quality of education for all learners. No country can achieve inclusive and equitable quality education if learners experience violence in school. School violence and bullying can also seriously  harm  the  health  and  well-being  of  children  and  adolescents  with  the  adverse  effects  persisting  into adulthood.

This report  aims  to  provide  education sector stakeholders with a framework for planning and implementing effective programmes to prevent  and  respond  to  school  violence  and  bullying  as  part  of  wider  efforts  to  address  violence  against  children," wrote Qian Tang, Ph.D, Assistant Director-General for Education, in a foreword of publication titled 'School Violence and Bullying: Global Status Report' which is available on-line that was prepared  by  UNESCO  and  the  Institute  of  School  Violence  and  Prevention  at  Ewha  Womans  University  for  the  'International  Symposium  on  School  Violence  and  Bullying: From  Evidence  to  Action', Seoul, Republic of Korea, 17-19 January 2017.

According to a news report of Times of India dated June 10, for A community-based study report on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity (SOGI) driven bullying in Tamil Nadu is going to be launched in Chennai, Tamil Nadu on June 11 by the Minister for School Education along with the UNESCO's Director Eric Fault and Principal Secretary of TN.

"In India, even at the school level SOGI-based bullying is prevalent but often goes unreported. In rural areas many children drop out of school because this type bullying not only by peers but also by teachers. The launching of the study report done by Sahodaran and sponsored by UNESCO office in New Delhi will pave the way to improve social pedagogy in schools which is a pre-condition to learning and retain children in schools," said a retired female teacher in Jaipur while reacting to the analytical news story.

In our country, the identity and social pedagogies - also called social justice pedagogy - are not  deliberately built into educational practices which treat everyone as a 'learner' irrespective their caste, creed, colour, abilities, social status, gender identities. We need to create and experiment with schools as models of social justice pedagogy and inclusion for others to aspire to become so, I feel
