JNU IS known for frequent protests using Gandhian methods like strikes, protest march, dharna and hunger strikes. But this one was bizarre or can be termed as gross madness. Under dramatic circumstance, a student at 8th floor of the library threatened to jump if his demand was not fulfilled. Leaving entire JNU shocked, this person named Mahboob was demanding revocation of rustication, which was imposed on some students while they interrupted the selling of prospectus. University administration and police personnel are still negotiating with the person. Police vehicles, fire brigade and ambulance were rushed to the library building where this ‘Sholay’ style drama was enacted. The incident started around 12 noon and was on till 4 pm. Later, the student was forced to get down at around 4.15 pm.
A huge crowd gathered near the library and everyone had his own explanations. While some people were critical of his mindless act, there were many who sympathised with him. But keeping with JNU’s academic spirit, students from the sociology categorised this act as an attempt in altruistic suicide, according to Durkheim’s explanations. Altruistic suicide is a result of too much integration. It occurs at the opposite end of the integration scale as egoistic suicide. Self-sacrifice is the defining trait, where individuals were so integrated into social groups that they lost sight of their individuality and became willing to sacrifice themselves to the group’s interests, even if that sacrifice was their own life.
But the question arises, Was this act so much integrated with the social cause, which is being carried on by JNU Students Union? Or is it an attention seeking attempt coupled with the personal psychological disorder of the person. Whatever the reason, the careless approach of the administration is very obvious. Similar drama occurred when the Registrar was kept hostage for the entire day in his car. Academic bias, poor infrastructure, corruption, poor discipline and lack of trust in the administration is surely troubling the University’s environment.
