Chelsea has been knocked out of the League Cup after their defeat to Sunderland, 2-1 at the Stadium of Light. It was a huge surprise for Mourinho's men, as they were considered favourites and even sure of clinching a last four berth in the competition, only to be failed by men in red and white stripes of Sunderland, who were not willing to give up.
The game was in Chelsea's pocket until the 88th minute strike from Sunderland's Fabio Borini, who helped equalise and send the game to extra time. Chelsea had earlier taken lead after Sunderland's midfielder Cattermole scored an own goal in the 46th minute. It was an unfortunate situation for Cattermole, who has had a good season with Sunderland in his individual capacity. Cattermole must have taken a sigh of relief after Borini's goal.
This goal gave Sunderland an edge. Both teams got equal chances to find the back of the net in extra time, but it was Sunderland's Ki Sung-Yong, who scored in the 28th minute of extra time. The goal sparked an unbelievable atmosphere in the stadium. The home crowd went berserk until the final whistle blew, as they created a huge setback in the competition.
But, Chelsea players need to curse themselves for the exit. They got their fair share of chances to score a goal, which they could not capitalize. But one also needs to mention Sunderland's goalie Mannone who came up with neat saves during the game.
Mourinho, the Chelsea manager would be furious with his strikers in the park, Demba Ba and Etoo both failing to score even after getting their chances. Mourinho did not field Torres on the pitch, a decision he must be regretting after Etoo and Ba's performance.
