The People's Union for Civil Liberties? Vice-president and Chhattisgarh State General Secretary, Dr. Binayak Sen, has been granted bail by the Supreme Court on May 25 after two years of his arrest by the Chhattisgarh police on shaky grounds.
DR BINAYAK Sen was arrested on May 15, 2007, by the Chattishgarh police. The Supreme Court’s (SC) vacation bench, headed by Markandeya Katju, did not even allow the Chhattisgarh Counsel to raise an objection, before it granted bail to Dr Sen within minutes of taking up the case. One should remember that the state of Chhattisgarh had not heeded to the SC's earlier request to file the reasons for objecting to his bail. Advocate Shanti Bhushan represented Dr Binayak Sen.
Human Rights groups all over the world had been appealing to the Indian government for Dr Sen’s immediate release. A medical practitioner by profession, he had been serving the children in need in tribal areas.
Vijayan MJ of Delhi Forum, who was in the forefront in the campaign for Dr Sen’s release, said that his release marked a great victory for justice, as well as for all those who fought for it. “Kudos to all the silent warriors who made this possible,” he added.
.Finally, India's Supreme Court has ordered bail for Binayak Sen. Though welcoming this development, it has been two years late in coming. We will never forget it was more than two years ago that Raman Singh's Chhattisgarh government incarcerated a completely innocent Dr. Sen on utterly bogus and politically motivated charges in order to pursue its own diabolical agena.
